Exploring DE&I in the Workplace

February 23rd, 2022

Diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) is a term used to describe the programs, policies and efforts that aim to represent, include, and celebrate people of different groups and backgrounds. Diversity refers to the differences among groups of people, which can refer to race, ethnicity, gender identity, age, religion, and so much more. Equity is the fair and equal treatment of these groups of people and, lastly, inclusion is the way these groups are welcomed and included into a larger group.

DE&I is talked about in the lens of the workplace more and more each day. Companies across the world are crafting and executing policies and programs aimed towards creating a more diverse, equal, and inclusive workplace for all.

There is a strong case for companies having DE&I policies, strategies, and trainings. Just look at the facts:

  • According to a Glassdoor Survey, more than 3 out of 4 job seekers and employees (76%) report that a diverse workforce is an important factor when evaluating companies and job offers. More than ever before, candidates are researching a company’s diversity efforts before accepting a position.
  • Not only is diversity important for recruiting, but it can also lead to bottom-line success. A Gallup study published in the Journal of Leadership & Organizational Studies found that companies with above average gender diversity and employee engagement also had 46% to 58% better financial performance than companies below the median on diversity and engagement.

At The Bonadio Group, our Council for DE&I is aimed at creating a truly inclusive work environment where all our people are able to achieve their greatest potential to serve each other and our clients. The Council is made up of four committees dedicated to Communications, Alliances, Recruitment & Retention, and Education. And while employees from across the firm are involved in the Council, commitment must start at the top.

“Diversity means incorporating different viewpoints, and it’s critical to ensure those viewpoints are equally valued and fully included into the conversation and decision-making at any company,” said Bruce Zicari, CEO. “We envision a culture that fosters a sense of belonging, enabling everyone to feel empowered, valued, respected and safe.”

Furthermore, DE&I is more than just a term or an initiative that makes us feel like we’re doing good, “it’s a powerful business strategy that allows for unique skillsets, perspectives and solutions, all of which benefit our firm and our clients. It’s so important for us as an organization to invest in DE&I to better serve a range of clients and prospective clients,” said Bruce.

In addition to the Council for DE&I, The Bonadio Group is a signatory organization for the national CEO Action for Diversity and Inclusion. The firm has also made both the 2021 Accounting MOVE Project lists of Best Firms for Equity Leadership and Best CPA Firms for Women by the Accounting & Financial Women’s Alliance (AFWA) for six consecutive years.

In order to achieve the ultimate goal of better incorporating DE&I at the firm and the community, we must work together. It is crucial that everyone begins, and continues, educating themselves; constantly listening, learning, and remaining open to conversations throughout this journey.
